MYB transcription factor

A member of a large family of DNA-binding regulatory proteins. Different plant MYB proteins control processes including development, stress responses, and flavonoid production.

MYB proteins share a DNA-binding region called the MYB domain. Plants contain large MYB families whose members regulate many different processes, so the name describes a protein family rather than one pigment-specific switch.

Some R2R3-MYB proteins participate in MBW complexes MBW complex A regulatory protein complex formed by MYB, bHLH, and WD40 proteins. In flowering plants, MBW complexes control the expression of genes in several flavonoid pathways. that activate anthocyanin biosynthesis genes. Other MYB proteins repress the same pathway, and many MYBs regulate unrelated functions. Their effects depend on which genes they target, where they are expressed, and which partner proteins are present.

In cannabis, expression of the candidate regulators CsMYB82 and CsMYB87 has been correlated with anthocyanin-related genes in pigmented tissues. That evidence supports a regulatory role, but it does not by itself establish either protein as the sole controller of cannabis coloration.
