Phytocannabinoids are compounds made by cannabis. They are synthesized and stored mainly in glandular trichomes Trichome A hairlike structure on a plant surface. In cannabis, glandular trichomes on female flowers synthesize and store cannabinoids, terpenes and other metabolites. on female flowers. Fresh tissue contains many cannabinoids chiefly in acidic forms, such as THCA and CBDA.

Heat, time and storage conditions can convert acidic cannabinoids into neutral forms through decarboxylation. Individual cannabinoids differ in psychoactivity, pharmacology and the strength of evidence supporting particular effects.
