Diploid
Having two complete sets of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent. Cannabis is normally diploid, with 20 chromosomes arranged in 10 pairs.
Ploidy describes how many complete sets of chromosomes a cell contains. A diploid cell has two sets, conventionally written as 2n. Cannabis is normally diploid with 2n = 20: ten chromosomes in each set and 20 chromosomes in a typical somatic cell.
The two chromosomes in a pair are homologous. They carry genes at corresponding locations, but they do not have to carry identical DNA sequences. Different versions at the same location are alleles Allele An alternative DNA sequence found at a particular position in the genome. In a diploid cannabis plant, the two copies at that position may carry the same or different alleles. .
Sexual reproduction restores the diploid number when two haploid reproductive cells combine. Polyploid cannabis has additional chromosome sets and can occur through induced breeding, but it is not the ordinary chromosome condition of the species.
